Census Sampler

The Data Science Team is often asked to estimate the number of residents and jobs within custom geographies or isochrones thereof. "How many people live in this town centre?" for example, or "How many jobs are reachable within a 15-minute cycle ride from this train station?" Having answered these kinds of questions enough times, we decided to package our solution into a web application for all MRCagney staff to use. Thus was born Census Sampler.

Basically, one can do the following with Census Sampler.

  1. Draw or upload shapes (geographies) to the map.
  2. Optionally compute isochrones (or isodistances) about those shapes.
  3. Estimate NZ Census 2023 totals, such as number of residents, for those shapes or their isochrones, if drawn.
  4. Download the resulting geodata.
  5. Clear the map and start afresh.

Here is a short video demonstrating that workflow.

"Census Sampler does, in just a few clicks, something I'd previously have to ask the Data Science Team to do. What's more, by avoiding that up-front time cost, it allows me to do analyses I previously might not have. This improves our service and adds value for our clients." ~Shane Martin, Principal Economist at MRCagney
