Transit Flows

Transit Flows is a visualization we created to study vehicle and passenger flows through Auckland, New Zealand's public transport network. The visualization is an extension of Corridor Explorer.

Transit Flows combines scheduling, reatltime, and ticketing data for a typical peak day in March 2015 and color- and thickness-codes all the segments of the network according to one of several key indicators, such as number of vehicles per hour. You can select an indicator, a (General Transit Feed Specification) direction of travel, and a time period and then quickly get a big-picture view of the network according to those parameters. Clicking on a segment reveals further detail about that segment, such as the indicator value broken down by route.

We've used Transit Flows to inform our analyses of public transport plans, such as where to install double-decker buses in the coming years to avoid capacity bottlenecks.
